Starting Over With Michele
“Why are you scared of something you don’t even know is gonna happen?” Leila asked, in all of her five-year oldness, with clenched hands on her hips and a look of confusion on her face. It was the summer of 2006 and several of us had gathered at a friend’s house for a barbeque. His backyard was expansive and housed many tall trees; however, the very best one of all had a tire swing. When Leila and her family arrived, she had zeroed in on that tire swing long before the door to her parents car slammed shut. Out of all the people she could have asked to push her in this swing, Leila came to me, which would normally be a wise choice, but on this occasion I said no with a long list of why’s. “The rope could snap, you could sail through the middle of the tire, and you could get hurt.” She focused on my face for several minutes before throwing her hands up in the air and saying, “Oh well, I guess you’re gonna be missing out on a lot of fun.”
As you can imagine, Leila’s words stuck with me. First, it was rather frustrating knowing a five-year old was more connected to her spirit than I felt at age 37. Second, she was correct. I was no longer having fun in any areas of my life. Although at the time I owned a successful technology-consulting firm in Manhattan for close to a decade, lived in a fabulous Upper West Side apartment with views of Central Park, and travelled extensively, there was something missing. My divine plan and life purpose weren’t anywhere to be found, but, then again, up until that point I had not been looking very hard. It was right then that I embraced the importance of my “Life’s Dash” – the precious time between arrival and departure from this world that many of us take for granted. I took a good hard look at mine and knew I was no longer doing or living what I loved. I knew my Dash was meant for something greater.
